Ellison's father wanted Ellison to grow up to be a writer so they named him after Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ellison wanted to persue the career as a musician. Ellison is most know for Invisible Man which took him seven years to write beginning to end; published in 1952 by Random House.


Important Characters within Chapters 7-8

The Narrator- the entirety of the chapters involve his thought process

Ras the Exhorter- who is giving a speech when the narrator first arrives to Harlem

Dr. Bledsoe- President of the college, who eventually suspends IM.



Vocabulary:
Kunstlerroman: A novel whose central character is an artist of any kind, and which shows his or her development from childhood to maturity.
Bildungsroman: A genre of the novel which focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. Change is thus extremely important.
Sambo: a lazy black person or slave, used to be offensive to people of color
Ralph Waldo Emerson: a famous naturalist, poet, and essayist.
Boomerang: a scheme or argument; to backfire
Gesticulate- To use gestures, especially dramatic ones, instead of speaking or to emphasize one's words.
Autonomous- Acting independently or having the freedom to do so.
Endocrinology- The branch of physiology and medicine concerned with endocrine glands and hormones
Irony- is used when the narrator sees a movie about Indians who went through struggles with white men just like black men are in this specific era that the setting is taking place.

Naïve narrator- the narrator has no idea that the letters Dr. Bledsoe has given him to deliver are nothing more than a trick to hold the narrator back which causes problems in obtaining a job.

Stereotype- The narrator expects all blacks to be held back in society from all occupations of work because of race. He learns that all races are able to fulfill positions such as a police officer or work behind the counter in a store.
Intrinsic-belonging naturally.

*Dispossessed- deprive someone of something that they own, typically land or property.

*Nonchalance- appearing casually calm and relaxed.

*Malicious- intending or intended to do harm.

*Defunct- no longer existing or functioning.
*Indignant- feeling or showing anger or annoyance at what is perceived as unfair treatment.
